Verizon and Comcast are looking not to leave any of your money on the table for other providers. They are attempting to leverage their existing relationship with you (cable TV, phone, Internet) and get you to buy into their subscription for home security and energy management. What do you think?
The New Landscape
Verizon? They have stopped rolling out their best thing- FIOS. They are losing POTS (landline) phone users to their own and other cellular companies.
Comcast? Come on. They have a long way to go down customer-centric-innovation-lane before getting into securing homes and providing energy savings. Let's see some innovation around TV! Be the best at that and then try something new. Let's not even get started with customer service complaints we've heard (and experienced).
DIRECTV and Dish? Not even on their radar as far as we can tell.
Electric and other utilities? Um, innovation? They don't provide any other services at this time. Their Smart Energy services will also likely not integrate with other home services any time soon.
Security companies (burglar and fire)? Hmm. This is likely a good place for additional security and energy services to come from. The trick is finding progressive companies not mired in the old days of security (it's been around and virtually the same for a long time). But what about integrating with other in-home systems?
Systems integrators (like Red Atom Networks)? This is also likely a good place for new home security, smart energy and home monitoring to come from. Those integrators with a true integration mindset and an understanding of the importance of tying in security from the start will be the best to literally tie it all together. Integrators that get security can easily integrate it with smart energy, healthcare and other systems such as entertainment and surveillance.
