Multi-room distribution and control of high-definition video and music is generally achieved through an AV matrix switch like the one above from Xantech.  Several other vendors make similar products- Russound, Key Digital, Extron, etc.  These centrally located or sometimes distributed devices connect 4 or more video or music sources to 4 or more HDTV's or rooms with speakers.  You can choose which source you want in any room or the same source in every room for a dinner party.  Matrix switches generally are connected with CAT5e cable between the control keypad or video wall connection as shown above.  Please see How to Distribute Your HDTV Throughout Your Home for additional information.

These devices enable you to keep all of your audio and video hardware in a closet and distribute their content around the house with ease.  You don't have to have a cable box or DVD player in every room.  You can also keep all of your music in a central place, including iPods, XM and Sirius radio receivers, and access it from anywhere in the house.

They are RF and IR friendly which enable them to be controlled by remote controls, keypads and touchpanels.  They can also be integrated into home theater and home automation solutions.
